Sam Butterfield had an outstanding track & field career, selecting ESU over Kansas State University and the University of Kansas. As a freshman thinclad, Butterfield was a member of the league champion mile-relay team and earned his first varsity letter. As a sophomore, Sam was one of five Hornet tracksters to compete in the prestigious Texas Relays. That Hornet team finished fourth in the distance medley relay. After that sophomore season, Butterfield served his country in World War II as a member of the Air Force. After obtaining his degree in 1947, Butterfield went on to a successful career as a high school and junior college basketball coach and administrator. His coaching tour included stops at Wamego High school, Garden City High School and Hutchinson Community College. While at Hutchinson, Butterfield’s teams went 180-61 and made four appearances in the National Junior College Tournament, finishing third on two occasions. Butterfield also served as Director of Athletics at Hutchinson from 1964-85. An outstanding administrator, Butterfield was inducted into the Athletic Director’s Helms Hall of Fame while at Hutchinson and has served on numerous executive committees as a junior college representative.
