Rhonda Clarke’s accomplishments in a Hornet softball uniform have yet to be paralleled. Clarke, a Hornet during the 1983-84 seasons, led ESU to back-to-back NAIA National Tournament Championships. Her efforts were remarkable as a pitcher and a hitter. Clarke came to Emporia State in the fall of 1982 after transferring from the University of Kansas. In 1983, she compiled a 27-6 record and a 0.34 ERA as a hurler, with 17 of those wins shutouts, including four no-hitters. Clarke also led the team with a .333 batting average. For her efforts, Clarke garnered all-district, all-conference, and ultimately, NAIA All-American status. Her determination and hard work also were rewarded by being recognized as the NAIA National Tournament MVP in both 1983 and 1984. Clarke earned the NAIA’s highest honor last year as a member of the 1992 class of inductees into the NAIA Hall of Fame.
