H. W. "Bill" Hargiss came to Emporia State University in 1905 and participated in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was head football coach for 12 years and compiled a 62-23-11 record. His 1926 squad produced a 7-0-0 record, the only perfect season in ESU history. He also had two other undefeated teams. Five times his teams won or tied for conference championships. His track teams won seven state titles. Hargiss, who coached members of the U.S. Air Force track team for the 1960 Olympics, is a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame.
