John Lohmeyer is regarded as one of the best defensive linemen to play at Emporia State University during football’s modern era.  A four-year letterman, he was an NAIA first-team all-American as a senior in 1972.  He was a tri-captain as a senior and was named to the NAIA District 10 and GPAC Coaches and Team Captains all-conference first-teams.  When the Hornets played in the Boot Hill Bowl at the end of the ’72 season, Lohmeyer was the game’s outstanding defensive player.  He also was an all-conference pick as a junior.  In 1972, he helped lead the Hornets to the GPAC championship and a third-place ranking in the NAIA poll.  Following his collegiate career, Lohmeyer was drafted in the fourth round by the Kansas City Chiefs.  He played professionally for four years.
