Dr. Ron Slaymaker played basketball at Emporia State University from 1954-60 after surviving two years in the U.S. Army.  Slaymaker was a first team all-conference three years and honorable mention all-American in 1957-58.  He was the National small college free throw champion in 1960 and still holds school record for free throw percentage in single season at .909.  Slaymaker has gone on to coach ESU basketball and was named NAIA National Coach of the Year here in 1985-86.  Slaymaker was honored as a Distinguished Alumni of Emporia State University in 1986.  He also served as head coach of the 1st NAIA All-American team that was to tour Greece in 1985 and was an assistant coach in 1986 for U.S. Olympic Festival.  He also was an assistant coach at the World University Games in Yugoslavia in 1987 and the Chief of Mission at the World’s Sports Fair in Tokyo in 1986.
