 Kempf was a  two-sport standout for the Hornets, participating in swimming and in track and field.  In the pool, she earned AIAW All-American honors in 1980 in the 50-yard freestyle after finishing 10th at the national championships.  She also won several regional  and conference titles during her career.  Upon graduation, she held school records in the 50, 100, and 200-yard freestyle events.  In track and field, the Hutchinson native was a conference champion in the high jump and held the school record in the event for several years.  She also competed in relays and hurdles.  She continues be active in athletics as a physical education instructor in the Lawrence School District.
