Elvin McCoy was an outstanding football player on the Hornet teams from 1928-31. As a quarterback, he was named to the all-state and all-conference teams for four consecutive seasons. As a senior, he played in the East West Shrine Game when it and the Rose Bowl were the two major college bowl games. McCoy, a four-year letterman, demonstrated his ability to score points quickly on two occasions. He once scored four touchdowns in the first quarter against an opponent. Against another team, McCoy returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown and, when the opponent elected to kickoff following the score, he returned that kick 80 yards for a score. He was a member of the Hornets’ 1929 conference championship team that shut out six of its opponents.
