Emporia State won the 1958 national championship by six points over South Dakota State.  The All-American trio of Paul Whitely, Dennis Matheson and Warner Wirta led the way for the Hornets. Emporia State won back to back titles with a four point victory over Nebraska-Kearney. Paul Whitely, Warner Wirta and Dennis Matheson again earned All-American honors to lead ESU.
