George "Dutch" Holtfrerich earned 12 letters while attending Emporia State University in the early 1920s.  An all-around athlete, he lettered four years each in football, basketball and track & field.  An offensive and defensive end in football, Holtfrerich twice was named all-state and all-conference, and was named to the Chicago Tribune’s All-Western team as a senior.  During his basketball career, he also was an all-state and all-conference pick while serving as team captain his junior and senior years.  In track, he participated in five events and held conference records in the javelin and the mile relay.  He is one of only three ESU athletes to letter four years each in three different sports.
