Matheson was a three-time All-American in cross country for the Hornets. He finished fourth in the nation in 1958, 11th in 1959 and 12th in 1960 at the NAIA National Championships. He was a member of the 1958 and 1959 NAIA National Championship team in cross country and 1959 NCAA cross country national runner-up team.
