Dickey was a four year starter for the Hornet baseball team and also competed in basketball and track for ESU.  He  was a member of the AAU?national champion mile relay team and threw a no hitter against Washburn. He spent 23 years as HPER?chairman, professor and athletic director at Pittsburg State and 13 years in the same capacity at Adams State. He was instrumental in instituting Rule 10 for volunteer coaches with the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
