A native of El Doret, Kenya, Kipelio was a three-time NAIA national champion, twice in the steeplechase and once in the indoor two-mile. He was a nine-time All-American in track and once in cross country. Kipelio holds four ESU records, in the indoor 3000m and 5000m and the outdoor steeplechase and 5000m
