Stafford was a four-time NAIA National Tournament qualifier during his career with the Hornets.   Teamed with Eddie Quirarte, he lost in the first round in 1977.  The Emporia native returned to nationals in 1978 and won two matches.  He also collected five points in the 1979 national tournament after finishing that year with a  20-5 record in singles and 20-6 in doubles with Ken Hush.  Stafford and Hush were the first teammates in District 10 history to qualify for singles at nationals in the same year.  Stafford ended his career by winning three doubles matches and one singles match in his final appearance at the national tournament.  In 1981, he won the  No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles championship at the CSIC tournament. For the past eight years, he has served as women’s tennis coach at The Wichita State University.  His teams won Missouri Valley Conference titles in 1994 and 1995.  The 1995 MVC?Coach of the Year currently is the top ranked player in singles and doubles in Kansas.  He captured the singles and doubles titles at the 1994 Mid-Continent Open in Wichita.
