Ireland Sloan ran track and cross country for Emporia State University from 1961-64. After transferring from Morehead State (Ky.) in 1961, Sloan had an illustrious career for the Hornets. He was a conference champion and record setter in cross country and the indoor and outdoor two-mile. Sloan was selected as an all-American in cross country from 1961-63 and in track from 1962-64. He won national championships in cross country in 1962, indoor two-mile in 1964, and steeplechase in 1964. Sloan made history in 1961 when he became the first American to run in the AAU national championship in cross country. He later became the first Kansas collegian to break nine minutes in the two-mile. At ESU, Sloan held numerous school records in cross country and track; at induction, he still holds the marks for indoor track two and three mile runs and outdoor track 3000-meter run.
