Emporia State advanced to the championship game of the first official NAIA Softball World Series. The Hornets opened the World Series with a 1-0 win over Southern Utah then defeated Salem (WV) 12-0 before dropping their first game of the tournament 1-0 to tourney host Sam Houston State. Emporia State would win three straight games beginning with a 1-0 win over Kearney State and a 3-2 win over Pittsburg State before taking a 1-0 win over Sam Houston in the first championship game. Sam Houston would win the rubber match 1-0 to take the inaugural NAIA title. Brenda Stolle was named the Most Valuable Player in a losing effort. ESU finished the season 37-16.
