January 20, 2023-The Emporia State men won the championship and the women finished second at the Central Missouri Invite on Friday night in Warrensburg, Mo. The Hornet men outscored the host Mules 166.50 to 127.50 while the ESU women scored 143 points to finish second to the host Jennies who finished with 200 points. There were a total of six teams competing in the meet. Emporia State had two provisional qualifiers, nine event champions and ten runners-up on the day.
Megan McManis cleared a provisional qualifying bar of 3.78m (12-4.75) to win the women's pole vault. She is ranked 12th in the nation on Friday night.
Travis Morrison finished third with a provisional qualifier of 17.08 (56-0.50) to place third in the men's shot put. He is ranked 12th in the nation on Friday night.
Ashley Cookson won the women's triple jump with a mark of 10.80m (35-5.25) while
Emma Seidl had a mark of 12.81m (42-0.50) to win the women's shot put.
The Hornet men won both horizontal jumping events.
Ty Anderson went 6.81m (22-4.25) to win the men's long jump before running a 6.89 to finish as the runner-up in the 60m dash.
Josiah Driggers went 13.72m (45-0.25) to lead an Emporia State sweep in the men's triple.
Lauren Carlson won two individual championships on the track to lead the Emporia State women. She ran 7.85 to win the women's 60m dash and came back to clock 25.94 to win the 200m. She teamed with
Abigael Reid,
Hollie Marlow and
Jasmine Hurla to place second with a time of 4:06.02 in the women's 4x400m relay.
Abigael Reid won the 600 yard run in a time of 1:29.08 in addition to a third place finish in the 60m hurdles and fifth place showing in the long jump.
Jack Watson ran 22.89 in the 200m for the Hornets lone individual win on the track for the men. He came back to team with
Guy Ramos,
Brock Merz and
Hayden Goodpaster to run 3:25.14 to win the men's 4x400m relay.
Emporia State had two runner-up finishes in the field events.
Luke Grace cleared 1.91m (6-3.25) to place second in the men's high jump while
Tristan Madden went 13.40m (43-11.75) to finish second in the men's triple jump.
Emporia State had a total of eight runner-up performances on the track.
In addition to Anderson's runner-up in the 60m, Ramos was second with a time of 23.03 in the 200m, Merz ran 51.96 to place second in the 400m dash,
Davion Scott was the runner-up in the 600 yard run in 1:14.78, Colby Ferbache ran 2:02.17 to finish second in the 800m run, and
Tyler Swift wrapped up the individual runners-up with a time of 8:48.01 in the 3000m.
For the women Hurla ran 1:00.35 to place second in the 400m along with the 4x400m relay team.
The Hornets will be back in action on Saturday, January 28 when they travel to Pittsburg, Kan. for the Wendy's/PSU Invitational.
