At ESU
2019-20: Rooney begins his collegiate career with the Hornets where he looks to improve his hurdles technique. Rooney ran a lifetime best in the 600 yards at the Bearcat Open by running 1:15.63. Rooney's outdoor season was canceled due to COVID-19.
2020-21: Rooney has found his stride in the 400 hurdles this season. He opened the outdoor season with a mark of 55.19 in the 400 hurdles at the ESU Spring Invitational. Rooney set a lifetime best in the 400 hurdles at the Midwest Classic where he ran a 54.44.
