January 28, 2023-Emporia State finished the Wendy's/Pittsburg State Invitational with 15 top ten finishes, two provisional qualifiers, and an event championship on Saturday in Pittsburg, Kan. There were nearly 1,000 competitors in the all day event at the Plaster Center.
Tyler Swift got things started on the track for the Hornets. He cracked the 15-minute mark as he ran 14:59.62 to win the men's 5000m in the first final on the track.
The 4x400m relay team of
Hayden Goodpaster,
Jack Watson,
Carter Cox, and
Brock Merz had a provisional qualifier for the men. They ran 3:16.48 to place sixth.
Abigael Reid ran 1:27.24 to place third in the 600 yard run for the top finish on the track for the Emporia State women.
Travis Morrison had a provisional qualifier in the men's shot put at 17.07m (56-0) to place seventh. It is just one centimeter short of his personal best set last weekend as he is ranked third in Emporia State history.
Alyssa Conway was third with a personal best of 16.83m (55-3) in the women's weight throw. It is the fifth best throw in Emporia State history.
The Hornets picked up ten other top ten finishes.
Aaron Hunt in the pole vault and
Jaime Diaz in the 5000m placed fourth for the men.
Megan McManis and
Emma Seidl placed sixth in the women's pole vault and shot put respectively. The women's 4x400m relay of
Lauren Carlson,
Abigael Reid,
Jasmine Hurla, and
Makenzie Owings finished seventh. ESU got ninth place finishes from
Tayler Williams in the women's 5000m and
Grace Jacobs in the women's high jump.
Chase Rooney was tenth in the men's 600 yard run while
Luke Grace and
Jaxon Russell tied for tenth in the men's high jump to round out the top ten finishes.
Emporia State will be back in action starting Friday, February 3 at the Washburn Open in Topeka, Kan.
