Jenna Ramsey picked up Emporia State's first conference win in the women's 10,000m since 2003 to highlight day one at the MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pittsburg, Kan. She was one of four Hornet women to place in the top four during finals on Saturday as Emporia State is in third place in the women's team standings after day one. The Emporia State men only scored in one event on Saturday but qualified six for Sunday's finals on the track.
Ramsey capped a good first day for the Hornets with Emporia State's first championship in the women's 10,000m since Kadri Kelve won the event in 2003. The freshman from Hutchinson, Kan. was ranked second in the event entering the championships and ran 37:54.69 to win by over 25 seconds.
The day began with the multi-events and
Clara Eilert is in fifth place after four events with 2840 points. That was just the beginning for Eilert, who would clear a personal best and provisional qualifier of 5-8.50 (1.74m) to place second in the high jump. She is now tied for second on the Emporia State all-time list with Trish Bahr who went over 5-8.50 at the 1988 NAIA National Championships.
Madison Runnion went over 5-6.00 (1.68m) for another provisional qualifier to place sixth and give Emporia State a total of 11 points in the high jump.
Jazmin Williams turned in a season's best 19-09.75 (6.04m) to hit a provisional qualifier and place third in the long jump.
Alyssa Conway provisionalled in the hammer for the seventh time in seven meets, throwing 180-2 (54.93m) to place fourth.
The women also got a provisional qualifier from
Megan McManis in the pole vault. She cleared 12-1.50 (3.70m) to place tenth in a field that saw the top 12 hit the provisional qualifying mark.
The Emporia State men had athletes advance to the finals in five of the six preliminary events and turned in four NCAA provisional qualifiers on Saturday.
Juwan Johnson and
Tanner Raubenstine both qualified for the finals in two events. Johnson ran the third fastest 100m in Emporia State history as his wind legal 10.40 is second heading into the finals. He then ran a 21.37 to qualify fourth in the 200m. Raubenstine ran a provisional qualifier of 14.39 for the fourth best time in the 100m hurdle prelims. He then joined Johnson in the finals of the 100m in 10.57 to also hit the provisional mark.
Davion Scott rank a personal best 54.25 to qualify for the finals in the 400m hurdles with the sixth best time in the prelims.
Brandon Rhone had the final qualifier for Sunday's finals after he ran a 48.76 in the 400m prelims to finish seventh.
Kaleb Barber scored the only points for the Hornet men on Saturday. He jumped a career best 23-7.25 (7.19m) to place seventh in the long jump.
Carter Swindale had the other provisional qualifier for the Emporia State men after throwing 200-4 (61.06m) to place ninth in the men's javelin.
The final day of competition in Pittsburg will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday with
Aren Trost in day two of the men's decathlon.
