April 3, 2026-The Emporia State men's track and field team won the team competition and the women were second at the Midwest Classic this weekend at Welch Stadium and Witten Track. The Hornets combined for nine event championships, two school records and ten provisional marks during the two day meet.
Stella Agbokpah continued her outstanding freshman campaign for the Emporia State women. She won both the 100m and 200m in school record fashion. She went 11.58 to capture first in the 100m and break her tie with Latiyera Yeargin (11.63 in 2018) for the school record. She then ran 23.75 to break Courtney Bruna's school mark in the 200m. She is ranked in the top ten in the nation in both events as of Friday night. She also joined
Mackenzie Sauerwein,
Barbara Bentum and
Alexia Lewis to run 47.05 and win the 4x100m relay.
Lou Dumas finished second in the heptathlon with a provisional qualifying total of 4,596 points while
Madison Vermetten recorded a provisional mark of 45.65m (149-09) to place third in the discus on Friday.
Isabella Davie also had an event championship for the Hornet women, running 2:15.92 to win the 800m.
The Hornet men had four different individuals win event championships on Saturday with three of them recording provisional qualifying marks.
Ezekiel Seamster won the 100m with a meet record time of 10.27 that is currently fifth in the nation as of Friday night. He broke fellow Hornet
Ty Anderson's meet record of 10.29 set in 2024.
Israel Domeh finished second at 10.45 for Emporia State.
Domeh ran a provisional qualifying time of 21.10 to win the men's 200m. Seamster was second in the 200m with a time of 21.23.
Connor Deters moved into fourth place on the Emporia State all-time list in the men's shot put. He went 17.58m (57-08.25) to win the event and rank ninth in the nation as of Friday night. Deters also finished second in the discus with a mark of 47.94m (157-03).
Max Neeley had the other event championship for the Hornet. He won a weather shortened pole vault by clearing 4.60m (15-01.00) before the meet was delayed by lightning with the bar at 4.75m. With the change in wind direction following the delay it was deemed unsafe to continue the event.
Seamster and Domeh combined with
Tyus Wills and
Alden Mollerus to run 41.17 and finish second in the men's 4x100m relay.
Emporia State also got runner up finishes from
Emmanuel Dukpe and
Gage Chapman. Dukpe finished second in the 400m with a time of 47.59 while Chapman ran 16:16.53 to finish second in the men's 5000m.
After hosting meets the last two weeks Emporia State will hit the road next weekend for the Butler CC Grizzly Gold Invite. Action begins on Friday, April 10 in El Dorado, Kan.
