#13 HORNET BASEBALL PICKS UP 8-6 MID-WEEK WIN OVER JETS

Alex White hits three for three with four RBI

March 1, 2017 - The #13 Emporia State baseball team picked up an 8-6 mid-week, non-conference win over Newman University on Wednesday afternoon to improve to 11-2 on the season.

Alex White singled to left center to plate two runs and put the Hornets up 2-0 in the top of the second. The Jets took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second off three hits, leaving two on base. Emporia State tied the game at three a piece in the top of the third.

The Hornets extended their lead 6-3 with three runs in the top of the fourth. White had another two RBI single to center field followed by a single from Mack Gowing that would bring White home. The Jets added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to trail 6-5 headed into the sixth inning.

Taylor Sanagorski scored in the top of the sixth from a Gowing sac fly to put Emporia State up 7-5. Newman answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the seventh to close the gap 7-6. Gowing singled through the left side in the top of the eighth to score Sanagorski again and give the Hornets the wiggle room for the 8-6 win. Nathan Whitcomb pitched the final inning to get his third save of the year, his second in three days.

White led the Hornets, hitting three for three with four RBI. Gowing went three for four with three RBI. Tucker Perkins hit two for four scoring two runs against the Jets. Jacob Tetuan picked up his first win of the year, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing no runs on two hits and a strikeout.

The #13 Hornets will travel to Quincy, Ill. to face Quincy University in a three game series. Game one of a double header on Saturday, March 4 will begin 12:00 p.m. at QU Stadium. The third game of the series will be at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 5.
