April 6, 2024-A school record, nine provisional qualifiers and five top five school marks highlighted Emporia State's Saturday at the David Suenram Gorilla Classic in Pittsburg, Kan.

Mele Taula had a big day for the Emporia State women with two wins, two provisional qualifiers and a school record. She threw 46.84m (153-8) to win the javelin and break Sarah Dunkin's school record of 151-7 set at the 2013 ESU Spring Open. She then won the women's shot put on her last attempt, going 14.39m (47-3) to move past Washburn's Shanice Hutson. Her javelin mark is second in the nation as of Saturday night.

Trenden Collins moved into third all-time at Emporia State as he cleared 2.11m (6-11) to finish second in the men's high jump. He was one of three Hornet men that finished second in Pittsburg with a provisional mark.Â

Jake Johnson was second with a provisional qualifier of 53.12 in the men's 400m hurdles while
Travis Morrison had another provisional mark, 17.47m (57-3.5), to place second in the shot put.

In a loaded men's 100m field
Kingsley Bennett and
Ty Anderson both moved into the top six all-time at Emporia State with provisional qualifying times. Bennett ran 10.37 to rank third and Anderson was clocked in 10.41 to rank sixth on the ESU all-time list. Bennett was ninth and Anderson finished 11
th as both moved into the top 20 nationally in the event. They also teamed with
Carter Cox and
Isaac Tarango to run a provisional qualifying time of 40.65 to finish fourth in the 4x100m relay.

Madison Vermetten rounds out the provisional marks as she threw 46.13m (151-4) to place third in the women's discus.

Aaron Hunt moved into the top three all-time at Emporia State in the men's pole vault as he cleared 4.76m (15-7.5) to place 12
th in Pittsburg.

Isabel Vikoler ran 1:05.48 to place second and
Kennedy Smith ran 1:06.74 to place third in the women's 400m hurdles.

Brandon Wilkes was third in the men's 400m hurdles in 54.14 while
Tyler Swift ran 3:59.86 to place third in the 1500m.Â
Jack Watson,
Isaac Tarango,
Carter Cox, and
Jake Johnson rounded out the top three finishes for the Hornets with a time of 3:15.09 in the men's 4x400m relay.

The Hornets will be back in action this weekend as they play host to the Midwest Classic in Welch Stadium and Witten Track. This will be a Division II only meet and could serve as a preview of the NCAA Division II National Championships scheduled for May 23-25 in Emporia. Things will get underway on Thursday with the multi-events. The multis will wrap up on Friday along with the start of the field and track events. Action will wrap up on Saturday starting with field events at 11:00 a.m. with the first running events stepping on the Golden Oval at 12 noon.
