April 12, 2024-Emporia State combined to have eight provisional qualifiers, four event champions, three top five performers and six runner-up finishes at the Midwest Classic at Welch Stadium.  The Hornet men won the team competition, edging out Neb.-Kearney by 1.5 points while the Emporia State women finished in fourth place.
 
Aren Trost got things started for the Hornets by winning the men's decathlon. He had the top mark in each event contested on Friday and scored a provisional qualifying total of 6,595 points. He is ranked 13^th in the nation heading into Saturday action around the country.
 
Ty Anderson ran a provisional qualifier of 10.40 in the 100m prelims and then unleashed a meet record 10.29 to win the finals. It is the second fastest men's 100m in Emporia State history and ranks ninth in the nation as of Friday night.
 
Jake Johnson wrapped up the wins on the men's side with a provisional qualifier and meet record of 52.25 in the 400m hurdles.  It is the fourth fastest 400m hurdle time in ESU history and ranks tenth in the nation going into the weekend.
 
The 4x400m relay team of Jack Watson, Isaac Tarango, Carter Cox and Jake Johnson combined for a provisional qualifying time of 3:11.87 to finish second behind Northwest Missouri.  They are currently ranked 17^th in the nation.
 
Trenden Collins and Travis Morrison each finished second with provisional qualifiers in their specialties.  Collins cleared 2.10m (610.75) to finish second in the men's high jump while Morrison threw 17.94m (58-10.25) to place second in the shot put.  Both have had better marks this season that have them ranked in the top 12 nationally.
 
Zach Sulzen-Watson had the other runner-up finish for the Hornet men.  He placed second with a mark of 48.83m (160-2) in the men's discus.
 
Abigael Reid continued her comeback season with a personal best and provisional qualifier in the women's 400m hurdles.  She won the event with a time of 1:01.10 that ranks third all-time at Emporia State and is tenth in the nation headed into the weekend.
 
Clarice Nichols jumped 5.67m (18-7.25) to win the women's long jump.
 
Reid combined with Hollie Marlow, Mackenzie Owings and Lauren Carlson to run a season's best 3:51.65 and place second in the women's 4x400m relay.   Carlson and Clarice Nichols joined Kadiasha Mpwo, and Ashley Wildeman to run 47.64 for a runner-up finish in the women's 4x100m relay as well.
 
Emporia State will head to Lawrence, Kan. next weekend for the 101^st anniversary running of the Kansas Relays.  Events begin on Thursday and run through Saturday at Rock Chalk Park.
 
NOTES:
There were 41 NCAA Division II Provisional Qualifier at the Midwest Classic. Of those 41, 16 are currently ranked in the top ten of NCAA Division II.
There were 14 meet records set at the Midwest Classic.
