#14 HORNET BASEBALL WITH COME FROM BEHIND 16-6 RUN-RULE OVER ICHABODS IN TURNPIKE TUSSLE TAKE TWO

Nine Hornets with at least one RBI

April 18, 2017 - The #14 Hornet baseball team came from behind to run-rule the Ichabods 16-6 in eight innings in game two of the Turnpike Tussle series. There were nine different Hornets with at least one RBI and five with two or more hits.

ICHABODS' INNING
Washburn scored four runs on six hits, leaving the bases loaded in the first inning to take a quick lead 4-0 lead after one.

CHIP AWAY
Emporia State scored two in the bottom of the second to close the gap 4-2. The Ichabods extended their lead back to 5-2 in the top of the third inning on three hits. The Hornets answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third to get within 5-3 when Mason Brown had an RBI single to left center. Emporia State tied the game at 5-5 when they plated another two in the bottom of the fourth on a Brown sac fly and a Mack Gowing single up the middle.

RUN AWAY WITH IT
The Hornets took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring three runs to lead 8-5 after Kaden Shaffer scored on a wild pitch followed by an Alex White two RBI single down the left field line. Washburn had a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to come within 8-6 before Emporia State took control, scoring five runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth. Shaffer tripled to right center to plate Gowing followed by back-to-back hit-by-pitches to load the bases with one out. Levi Ashmore then singled to right center to score two more runs. A White sac fly and a Ryan McBroom double down the right field line plated the final two runs of the inning for the Hornets to lead 13-6. Emporia State scored two runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to run rule the Ichabods 16-6 in eight innings. The only inning the Hornets did not score was the first.

BY THE NUMBERS
Gowing hit four for four on the evening, walking twice and scoring three runs. Wade Hanna went two for four with three RBI and two runs scored. Ashmore hit two for three and was walked three times, scoring three runs and bringing in two RBI. White went two for five with three RBI while McBroom hit three for five with two runs. Shaffer scored three runs. Seth Holman pitched 2.0 innings for his seventh win of the season. He allowed just one run on one hit with two strikeouts and a walk. The Hornet bullpen consisting of Trey Taylor, Taylor Thompson, Holman, Matt Slauter and Tyler Buss totaled eight strikeouts with just one walk.

SCHEDULE UPDATE
Due to forecasted weather, the Emporia State baseball schedule has changed for their weekend series against Lindenwood. Game one will now be played on Saturday, April 22 at 6:00 p.m. at Trusler. Game two is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 23 and game three is also at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 24.
