February 24, 2024-Saturday saw Emporia State record five provisional qualifiers, three top five ESU marks, and advance three people to the finals at the MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility in Topeka, Kan.

The multi-eventers gave the Hornets an early boost with all three men competing in the heptathlon scoring for Emporia State.
Aren Trost was the MIAA runner-up in the competition with a personal best and provisional qualifying total of 4,951 points. He began the day in sixth place after the first four events and steadily moved up. He placed sixth in both the 60m hurdles and pole vault, moving up one spot in the standings after each event. He then won the 1000m with a personal best time of 2:45.76 to move from fourth to second overall. His 4,951 points rank fifth all-time at Emporia State in the heptathlon.

Coby Smith made a huge jump for the Hornets, going from last after day one to sixth in the final standings with 4,697 points. He opened up with a seventh place showing in the 60m hurdles before clearing a personal best 4.57m (15-00.00) to have the top mark in the pole vault. The vault moved him from 11
th to seventh with one event remaining. He ran a personal best of 2:53.04 to finish sixth in the 1000m and move into sixth place overall.

Luke Grace started the day in fifth place but had dropped to tenth after two events. He came through with a personal best of 2:50.38 to finish fifth in the 1000m and jump into the scoring column for the Hornets. He finished with a personal best of 4,688 to place seventh overall.

Cooper Schroer, and
Tyler Swift ran 10:11.40 to place sixth in the distance medley relay. The Hornets ran the first three legs in seventh place before Swift was able to move them up one spot with a 4:17.94 split on his leg.

Ty Anderson got the other point for the Hornets on Saturday. He jumped a provisional qualifying mark and personal best of 7.13m (23-04.75) to place eighth in the long jump. It was the first of two provisional marks for Anderson on the day. He ran 6.76 in the prelims of the 60m to qualify for Sunday's finals with the third fastest time. It was a personal best for Anderson and ranks fourth all-time at Emporia State, moving him in front of Taysean Goodwin who 6.77 at the 2020 MIAA Championships.Â

Anderson will be joined in the finals of the 60m by
Kingsley Bennett. He ran a personal best and provisional time of 6.79 to qualify with the sixth best time. He moved into a tie for sixth on the Emporia State all-time list with Kenton Lonberger who ran 6.79 at the 2008 KSU All-Comers.

Jack Watson had the other provisional qualifier on Saturday for the Hornets. He ran 48.21 which is the fourth best time in Emporia State history in the 400m. He moved past
Hayden Goodpaster who ran a 48.29 at the 2020 Gorilla Classic. He advanced to Sunday with the eighth best time headed into the finals.Â

Jake Johnson ran a personal best time of 48.69 to finish 11
th in the prelims of the 400m. It is the sixth best time in Emporia State history in the event as he moved in front of Parker Evans who ran 48.73 at the 2016 MIAA Championships. Â Â

The Emporia State women just missed scoring finishes in two events on Saturday. Â
Catherine Lyon,
Abigael Reid,
Madeline Martin, and
Tayler Williams ran 12:54.21 to place ninth in the their first distance medley relay of the season.
Clarice Nichols advanced to the finals in the long jump with a personal best of 5.50m (18-00.50) but could not move into the scoring column for the Hornets.

There were two other top ten finishers for Emporia State.
Kennedy Smith ran 1:30.02 to place tenth in the 600 yards while
Grace Jacobs cleared a season's best 1.60m (5-03.00) to place tenth on misses in the high jump.

The final day of competition at the MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships will begin at noon on Sunday with the men's shot put and pole vault along with the women's triple jump. Emporia State's
Travis Morrison is ranked second in the MIAA and fifth in the nation in the shot put. Running events will begin at 1:30 p.m. with the men's mile run.
