First relay win at Drake for Hornet women since 1996

April 23, 2021-The women's sprint medley relay championship to highlight Friday's action for Emporia State at the 111th running of the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
 
Clarice Nichols, Ashley Wildeman, Jasmine Hurla, and Linnea Meier combined for a time of 4:07.33 to beat out second place Bemidji State by over a second.  Nichols led off with a 25.98 split in the first 200m and Wildeman followed with a 26.79 for her 200m.  Hurla had a 1:00.25 split over 400m and the Hornets were in fourth place going into the final 800m.  Meier turned in a 2:14.33 split as she ran down three teams to give the Emporia State women their first relay championship at Drake since 1996.
 
Matthew Maki had the top showing for the Emporia State men as he shaved 18 seconds off his previous career best in the 5000m.  His time of 14:43.21 was good for the runner-up spot.
 
The men's 4x100m relay team of Juwan Johnson, Jack Watson, Billy Ross Jr, and Hayden Goodpaster ran 42.14 to qualify for the Saturday's finals.
 
Allie Barrett cleared 11-7.75 (3.55m) to finish third in the pole vault for Emporia State.
 
The men's sprint medley relay of Johnson, Goodpaster, Brandon Rhone and Jared Reinke ran 3:28.06 to place fourth. 
 
The Emporia State women had two fifth place finishes in the field events.  Jazmin Williams lept 17-6.25 (5.34m) in the long jump while Holly Brockmeier went 125-8 (38.30m) in the javelin.
 
Emporia State will be back in action on Saturday morning to wrap up their two days at the Drake Relays.
 
NOTES
The last time Emporia State won a women's relay at Drake came in 1996. The foursome of Kari Pitman, Magali Schneider, Jessica Oberg and Deandra Doubrava who won the 4x400m relay in a then Drake Relays record time of 3:48.93 while Bridget Clem, Sharolyn Wilson, Doubrava and Schneider won the sprint medley with a time of 3:59.01 which was also a Drake Relays record at the time.
