April 17, 2021-The Emporia State men and women combined for eight event championships, 13 runner-up finishes and four provisional qualifiers as they swept the team titles at the Midwest Classic at Witten Track/Welch Stadium on Saturday. The Hornet men scored 200 points to out distance Cloud County CC by 73 points while the Emporia State women outscored Fort Hays State 156.50 – 146.50 for the championships. Both programs showed depth across the board with a win or runner up finish on the track, in the jumps, and in the throws.
Alyssa Conway continued her climb up the all-time list on the hammer at Emporia State. She won the event with a personal best of 184-08 (56.29m) to maintain her third place spot and pull within four inches of Lynda Barnard for second on the all-time list. She is now ranked seventh in the nation in the hammer as of Saturday night.
Megan McManis and
Allie Barrett finished 1-2 with a provisional qualifying clearance of 12-02.50 (3.72m) in the women's pole vault. McManis earned the championship based on misses. McManis is already the school record holder at 12-07.50 while Barrett moved into third on the Emporia State all-time list as she passed
Iva Shepherd who cleared 12-00.75 at the 2017 MIAA Championships.
Jenna Ramsey started the day with a championship in the women's 10,000m with a time of 37:33.10 that ranks second in the MIAA this year.
Emporia State also picked individual titles in the women's high and long jumps.
Jazmin Williams leapt 18-04.25 (5.59m) to win the long jump while
Madison Runnion cleared 5-03.75 (1.62m) to capture the high jump crown.
Brandon Rhone,
Guy Ramos,
Hayden Goodpaster and
Taysean Goodwin combined to run 3:15.60 to win the men's 4x400m relay in their first outing together. It is the third best time in the MIAA this season.
Juwan Johnson won the 100m dash with a time of 10.80 to give the Emporia State men an individual win on the track.
Kaleb Barber went 23-04.50 (7.12m) in the long jump for the Hornet men's lone field event win.
Travis Morrison had another provisional qualifier with a mark of 58-02.00 (17.73m) in the men's shot put to finish second.
Carter Swindale joined Morrison with a runner up finish in the men's throws with a mark of 180-11 (55.15m) in the javelin.
Nathan Ewing cleared 6-03.25 (1.91m) to finish second in the high jump.
The Hornet men had five runner-up finishes on the track.
Matthew Maki ran 31:13.89 in the 10,000m and is currently ranked fifth in the MIAA in the event.
Taysean Goodwin finished second with a time of 49.07 in the 400m while
Jared Reinke ran 4:01.07 to place second in the 1500m. Emporia State had the runner-up in both hurdle races for the men as well.
Xavier Hall ran 14.58 in the 110m hurdles while
Chase Rooney was clocked in 54.44 in the 400m hurdles.
Linnea Meier was the runner up with a time of 4:48.53 in the 1500m for the women.
Kadaisha Mpwo,
Ashley Wildeman,
Jazmin Williams, and ClariceNichols finished second in the 4x100m relay with a time of 49.12 while
Tatum Sefcik,
Subreedia Lewis,
Madeline Martin and
Hannah Schultz combined to run 4:33.68 and place second in the sprint medley relay.
Hannah Reynolds had the other second place finish for Emporia State with a mark of 136-10 (41.72m) in the women's discus.
Emporia State will be back in action next weekend with a split squad. They will be sending selected athletes to the Drake Relays Thursday through Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa while sending the majority of the team to the Pitt State Tune-Up in Pittsburg, Kan. on Saturday.
