April 1, 2017-The #9 Emporia State baseball team salvaged the final game of their series with Central Oklahoma, posting a 6-1 victory in Edmond, Okla. on Saturday.
For the third straight game Bronchos scored in the first inning to take a lead. Jake Dyer led off with a single and went to third on a single by Korey Floyd before scoring on a double play. That would be the only run scored on Hornet starter Jordan Plank, who was making his first start since March 12.
The Hornets tied the game in the second when BJ Dean led off with a double and went to third on a single by Mason Brown. Mack Gowing walked to load the bases and with one out Taylor Sanagorski walked to drive in Dean and tie the score.
Emporia State put up four runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead. Gowing and Kaden Shaffer started the inning with back to back singles. Sanagorski hit a sac fly to give the Hornets the lead. Pinch hitter Tucker Perkins followed with an RBI double to make it 3-1. Levi Ashmore then doubled in pinch runner Wade Hanna before scoring on a single by Alex White that gave Emporia State a 5-1 lead.
The Hornets added a run in the top of the eighth with two outs when White walked and then scored on Ryan McBroom's second triple of the game.
Plank worked 6.0 innings and allowed just one run on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Nathan Gieber threw 2.0 scoreless inning with two hits before Nathan Whitcomb worked a perfect ninth for the Hornets. McBroom was two for five with two triples and an RBI while Dean went two for five with a double and a run scored. Gowing also had two hits, going two for four with two singles and a run scored while Sanagorski had two RBI despite not getting a hit on the day.
Emporia State returns to the Trusler Sports Complex on Tuesday, April 4 to take on Missouri Western in the deciding game of their three game midweek series. First pitch from Glennen Field is set for 5:00 p.m.
