Luke Grace had the second best mark in two events to put himself in fifth place overall after day one of the MIAA Decathlon on Friday in Maryville, Mo.
Grace started the day running a personal best 11.33 in the 100m and followed it with another personal best of 6.90m in the long jump that ranked second in the competition. He recorded his third straight personal best going 11.42m in the shot put. The sophomore from Cheney, Kan. then cleared a season's best 1.93m to tie for the second best bar of the event. He wrapped up the day with a personal best of 53.22 in the 400m to finish with 3,562 points.
Aren Trost turned in two personal bests and a season's best to help him place ninth overall after five events. Normally a slow starter in the decathlon, Trost had a personal record of 11.63 in the first event of the day the 100m. After going 5.51m in the long jump he recorded the best mark of the competition in the shot put. He had a season's best 13.48m to win the event. He cleared 1.78m in the high jump before running a personal record 51.27 in the 400m He has 3,272 points to rank ninth after day one.
Coby Smith ran a personal best of 11.92 in the 100m but tweaked a hamstring ni the long jump. He finished the day with 2,720 points and is 12
th place out of the 14 competitors.
In the women's competition
Isabel Vikoler is in 11
th place with 2,463 points while
Scarlett Begley has scored 2,310 points to sit in 13
th place after the first four events of the heptathlon.
The multi events will resume at 10:00 a.m. with the decathlon 110m hurdles. The field events portion of the MIAA Championships will start at 12:00 p.m. with running eventsh starting at 4:30 p.m. at Bearcat Stadium in Maryville, Mo.
