April 27, 2024-Despite an early start and less than ideal conditions Emporia State's track and field teams came away with five provisional qualifiers, five new all-time top five marks and an event champion at the Rock Chalk Classic in Lawrence, Kan. on Saturday.

Xavier Hall won the men's 110m hurdles in a wind aided time of 13.98, becoming just the third man to go below 14 seconds in the 110m hurdles in Emporia State history. He is tied with Dustin Brock who ran 13.98 at the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Championships for second all-time behind Andrew Etheridge's 13.85 set at the 2013 NCAA Championships. The wind reading was 4.1 m/s, just over the 4.0 allowed for NCAA qualifying.

Madison Vermetten had a provisional qualifier and moved into the top five at Emporia State in the discus. Her throw of 48.35m (158-7) was good for sixth place in Lawrence and ranks third all-time at ESU.

Zach Sulzen-Watson and
Connor Deters each had provisional qualifiers in the men's discus. Sulzen-Watson finished fourth with a toss of 51.06m (167-6) while Deters went 50.62m (166-1) to place sixth.

Ashley Wildeman had two performances that moved her into the top five all-time at Emporia State. She ran a 24.33 to finish sixth in the women's 200m and ran 11.89 to place eighth in the 100m. Her 200m time is ranked fourth all-time at ESU while her 100m time is fifth all-time for the Hornets.

Mele Taula had a provisional mark of 14.22m (46-8) to place sixth in the women's shot put.

In a weather shortened men's shot put
Travis Morrison had a provisional qualifier of 16.65m (54-7.5) to place seventh. The event was halted before he was able to get his third throw of the prelims.

Aaron Hunt had the other top five all-time performance for Emporia State. He cleared 4.77m (15-7.75) to place eighth in the men's pole vault with the third best vault in ESU history.

The Emporia State men's 4x100m relay team of
Kingsley Bennett,
Ty Anderson,
Isaac Tarango and
Carter Cox were getting in the blocks when action was suspended at the Drake Relays. After waiting nearly three hours for a re-start the decision was made to return to Emporia without running.

The next action for Emporia State will be at the MIAA Championships May 3-5 in Maryville, Mo.
