Multi-events get Emporia State off to a good start at MIAA Indoor Championships

February 24, 2023-Multi-event athletes got Emporia State off to a good start on day one of the MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Pittsburg, Kan. on Friday.
 
Abigael Reid scored a personal best and NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark of 3,582 points and move up to fourth on the Emporia State all-time list. She placed seventh at the MIAA Championships in an event that saw the top 12 marks hit the NCAA Provisional standard. 

She opened the competition with a 9.15 in the 60m hurdles to start the day in tenth place.  She finished seventh in the high jump by clearing 1.57m, placed sixth in the shot with a personal best of 10.80m, and went 5.14m to place tenth in the long jump. She had her best finish of the competition when she ran an indoor personal best of 2:20.51 in the 800m and finish second. 
Her total of 5,382 points moved her past Nikki Wetstein, who scored 3,517 points at the 2014 MIAA Championships, into fourth on the Emporia State all-time list.
 
Victoria Pettay also competed in the pentathlon for the Hornets. She placed 13th overall with 2,992 points. Her best individual placing was seventh in the high jump when she cleared 1.57m.
 
After day one of the men's pentathlon Emporia State's Brandon Wilkes is in fifth place with 2,556 poitns while Aren Trost is eighth with 2,490 points.  Wilkes started the day with a time of 7.40 to place seventh in the 60m and then went 5.91m in the long jump to place ninth. Trost was ninth with a time of 7.62 in the 60m and placed eight at 5.99m in the long jump.  Both Hornets made a big jump in the standings in the shot put.  Trost won that portion of the competition with a mark of 12.91m while Wilkes placed second at 11.90m. In the final event of the day Wilkes cleared 1.82m to place fifth while Trost was eighth with a mark of 1.73m in the high jump.
 
Day two of the MIAA Indoor Championships will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the final three events of the heptathlon.  Field and running events will get started at 2:00 p.m. at the Plaster Center on the campus of Pittsburg State.
