February 4, 2017 – The #30 Hornets improved to 2-0 Saturday afternoon with a 27-14 win at Colorado State-Pueblo. A ten run second inning gave Emporia State a lead they did not look back from.
After a 1-1 tied ball game at the end of the first inning, the Hornets scored ten runs on just four hits in the second inning. Kaden Shaffer homered to left center to bring in two runs, putting Emporia State up 3-1. Later in the inning, BJ Dean doubled to left center to bring in two more runs, giving the Hornets an 8-1 lead. Alex White doubled to left center, again bringing in two more runs, making the score 11-1.
The Hornets plated another eight runs in the fourth inning and another six runs in the seventh.
BJ Dean hit four for four, with five runs, two doubles, two home runs and seven RBI. Mack Gowing hit four for five with four runs while Mason Brown hit three for four with four runs and three RBI. Tate Kastens and Alex White both added another three RBI. Taylor Thompson was credited the win pitching in 2.0 innings allowing seven hits and four runs. Tanner Cairns had the save, pitching 3.1 innings with only three hits and one run.
The #30 Hornets finish the three game series with CSU-Pueblo Sunday, Feb. 4 at 1:00 p.m.
