October 3, 2017-Emporia State stepped out of conference play on Tuesday night and came home with a four set victory at Newman on Tuesday night. The Hornets won 20-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-20 in Wichita.
Emporia State hit .344 in the opening set but four services aces from Newman and two service errors by the Hornets were the difference in the 25-20 win by the Jets.
The Hornets again out hit the Jets in the second set, led by Tatum Graves and Mikayla Simons going a combined 9 of 16 on hitting with no errors between them as Emporia State evened the match with a 25-19 second set victory.
The third set saw 11 ties and six lead changes before Yuchen Du ended the set with a kill to give the Hornets a 25-23 win and 2-1 advantage in the match.
Graves dominated the final set for the Hornets as she hit .714 on five of seven hitting with three blocks in the 25-20 deciding victory.
For the match Graves had 15 kills on .483 hitting with five blocks to pace the Hornets. Du added 14 kills with 25 assists and seven digs. Simons had ten kills on .391 hitting to join them in double figures. Allie Maloney had a team high 16 digs and added eight assists while Emma Dixon had 20 assists and 12 digs.
Emporia State returns to White Auditorium on Friday night to take on #8 Central Oklahoma. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
