January 23, 2015-The Emporia State men got top two finishes in 11 of 16 events to pull out a team victory at the UCM Invite on Friday in Warrensburg, Mo. The Emporia State women had three champions on the way to a third place finish in the team standings.
The Hornet men trailed the host Mules 71-45 with six events to go when they started their final push on the track. Cody Miller finished second and Luke Stenzel third while Alex Skinner placed fifth in the 600-yard run to pick up 16 points. The Hornets then got back-to-back championships in the 800m and 200m to take the lead. Bobby Thompson led three Hornet scorers in the 800m, winning with a time of 1:57.49 while Jordan Smith placed third and Daniel Claassen sixth. Ryan Dickson captured the 200m with a time of 22.28 and was joined in the scoring by Andrew Etheridge in fifth and Colin Coleman in sixth as the Hornets went up ten points. The Mules had three people score in the 3000m for 18 points, but Jacob Bull finished second in 8:54.58 to force a tie at 99 headed into the final two relays.
Central Missouri won the mile relay by 1.52 seconds over Emporia State to take a 109-107 lead into the distance medley relay. The Hornets had to finish two spots in front of the Mules to secure the team title. Bobby Thompson had the Hornets in front after his first leg of 1320 yards. Jordan Smith maintained the lead in a battle with Pittsburg State on the second leg of 440 yards. Daniel Claassen built on the lead during his 880 as both Emporia State and Pittsburg State opened up a 20 second lead over Central Missouri headed into the final mile. Thomas LaRoche maintained the lead over Central Missouri to assure at least a tie and Southwest Baptist was able to come from behind to nip the Mules at the end and give Emporia State the outright team title.
Andrew Etheridge had the only provisional qualifier for the Hornet men as he ran 8.05 to win the 60m hurdles. Sam Saidi also picked up a win for the Hornets, clearing 6-06.25 (1.99m) in the high jump. Jacob Bull had a pair of second place finishes, running 4:24.68 in the mile and 8:54.58 in the 3000m. Duke Tibbs was second in the 400m and Donald Wilcox placed second in the long jump to round out the runner-ups for the Hornets.
Carmen King led the scoring for the Emporia State women with two championships and an runner-up finish individually. She won the 60m with a time of 7.77 and then ran a 25.78 to capture the 200m title. She placed second in the long jump at 17-11.00 (5.46m) earlier in the day.
The Hornets did get two provisional qualifiers from the women. Morgan Brant cleared 5-08.50 (1.74m) to win the high jump and move up to fourth on the national chart this season. It is the second best high jump in Emporia State indoor history. Morgan Gilliland recorded another provisional in the shot put at 46-00.75 (14.04m) to place third.
Emporia State will be back in action next Friday at the Jayhawk Classic in Lawrence, Kan.
