CHAMPIONS ARE MADE IN MAY
Emporia State is taking their largest contingent in history to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colo. A total of 18 Hornets have qualified for the championships with ten men and eight women making the trip.
LAST TIME OUT
On a near perfect day for track and field Emporia State recorded 17 provisional and one automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships at the Sam Williams Qualifier at Witten Track/Welch Stadium. With Kawayne Fisher running the seventh fastest time in the world this season at 10.04 to pull him along, Shjuan Richardson ran a personal best 10.40 in the 100m. Gannon Mack officially punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships with an automatic time of 14.08 in the 110m hurdles. Dwayne Wall made a big jump in the triple jump with a mark of 49-06.50 (15.10m) to move up to 16th on the national list. It was PR of over a foot and a half for the senior. Donald Wilcox tied his career best with a wind-aided 24-06.25 (7.47m) but had four other jumps in his series hit the provisional mark. Carmen King moved up to third on the Emporia State all-time list in the long jump with a wind aided 19-07.00 (5.97m) but hit a legal jump of 19-06.00 (5.94m) to move into the top 15 nationally. Nikki Wetstein again broke her own school record with a 13.80 in the 100m hurdles. Marqueita Marisette ran an outdoor personal best of 55.76 to move to fourth all-time at Emporia State in the 400m. Marisette, Jackie Jacobs, Peyton Weiss and King ran the fourth fastest time in Emporia State history, 46.60, in the 400m relay.
THE?COACH
Steven Blocker is in his second year as the head coach for the Emporia State track and field/cross country programs. He served as an assistant with the Hornets since 2009 working primarily with the sprinters, jumpers and multi-event athletes. He had seven All-Americans and five MIAA Champions in his first year as head coach after producing 14 All-Americans, six MIAA Champions and an NCAA Division II National Champion as an assistant.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Hornet men were ranked #23 and the women #38 in this week's USTFCCCA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Team Rankings. The USTFCCCA system ranks all teams with athletes on the Track & Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS). The rankings are determined by all provisional and automatic qualifying marks accumulated during the 2013 outdoor season as reported to TFRRS.
HOW TOUGH IS IT?
Five MIAA men's teams are ranked in the USTFCCCA National Top 25, while the women have four teams in the top 25 nationally heading into the national championships. All 11 schools that sponsor track & field have at least one women's entry in the national championships and nine of the ten schools that sponsor men's track & field. The league has 54 men and 47 women competing in the national meet.
LAST YEAR'S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Last year the Hornet men finished 41st in the team standings, the tenth straight year they have scored at the national meet and the 18th time in the last 19 years they have scored. Vincent Howze placed sixth in the men's 200m for Emporia State to highlight the meet. Sara Dunkin was the top finisher for the Emporia State women with a ninth place showing in the javelin.
LEADERS
Emporia State has three people ranked in the top six nationally. Briar Ploude is fourth in the men's high jump at 7-02.25 (2.19m), Sara Dunkin is fifth in the women's javelin at 151-07 (46.20m), and Andrew Etheridge ran 13.97 to rank sixth in the men's 110m hurdles.
NOT THEIR FIRST RODEO
Of the 18 Hornets making the trip to Pueblo, half are making a return trip the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Seven of the remaining nine competed at this year's NCAA Indoor Championships. Dwayne Wall and Misty Lowe are the only two athletes making their National Championships debut as Hornets.
HE FLEW OVER THE BAR
All-American and MIAA Champion Briar Ploude (Jr./Meriden, Kan.) has the highest national ranking among the Emporia State men. He is ranked third in the high jump after clearing a school record 7-02.25 (2.19m) at the Drake Relays. He was the MIAA Champion indoors and outdoors this year. He finished 13th indoors this year in the high jump. This is his second trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He was a three-time All-American in the high jump indoors. He is an All-Region performer in the high jump.
HURDLE MAN
All-American and former national champion Andrew Etheridge (Jr./Wichita, Kan.) is ranked sixth in the 110m hurdles after running a school record 13.97 in the prelims of the MIAA Championships. He finished second in the finals at the MIAA meet. This is his third trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He clipped a hurdle at last year's national championships after winning the national title as a freshman in 2010. He is a three-time All-American in the 60m hurdles indoors and has two All-American honors outdoors, one as a member of the 2011 400m relay that placed third and as the 2011 national champion in the 110m hurdles.He is an All-Region performer in the 110m hurdles.
HE'S A CANNON
Gannon Mack (Sr./Houston, Texas) will be competing in two individual events in Pueblo. He is ranked 11th in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.08 set at the Sam Williams Qualifier last weekend. He also qualified with a time of 52.44 in the 400m hurdles in a runner-up performance at the Kansas Relays. He was second in the 400m hurdles and third in the 110m hurdles at the MIAA Championships this year. He won the 60m hurdles at this year's MIAA Indoor Championships and placed tenth nationally. This is his first trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.He is an All-Region performer in both the 110m and 400m hurdles.
SHJUAN TIME
All-American Shjuan Richardson (Sr./Muskogee, Okla.) is ranked 16th in the 100m. He ran a 10.40 at the Sam Williams Qualifier and is the 12th fastest football player regardless of NCAA Division in the country in the 100m this spring. He was named Second-Team All-American at wide receiver by Don Hanson's Football Gazette. He led the MIAA in receiving yards, finishing the season with 84 catches for 1,375 yards and 13 touchdowns and ranked third in the nation in total receiving yards. He ended his Hornet career ranked second in career receiving yards with 2,842 and career touchdown receptions with 28. This is his third trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships and first in an individual event. He was a member of the 400m relay that placed third in 2011 and ninth in 2010. He is an All-Region performer in the 100m.
FRESHMAN PHENOM
Payson Maydew (Fr./Pratt, Kan.) turned in a personal best 6,719 points at the OBU Last Chance Meet to qualify 14th in the decathlon. He placed third in the event at the MIAA Championships and was tenth in the heptathlon at the National Championships indoors. This is his first trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He was named the winner of the Emporia State Athletics Undergraduate Award of Excellence this spring. He is an All-Region performer in the decathlon.
OFF THE WALL
Dwayne Wall (Sr./Aurora, Neb.) hit a personal best 49-06.50 (15.10m) at the Sam Williams Qualifier to move up to 16th nationally. He is ranked third all-time at Emporia State in the triple jump. This is his first trip to an NCAA Championship event. He is an All-Region performer in the triple jump.
THE DONALD
Donald Wilcox (Jr./Lee's Summit, Mo.) is ranked 19th in the long jump after going 24-01.50 (7.35m) at the Drake Relays. He had a wind-aided mark of 24-06.50 (7.47m) at the Sam Williams Qualifier. He is ranked fifth all-time at Emporia State in the long jump. This is his second trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships after he placed 16th last year in the Outdoor National Championships. He is an All-Region performer in the long jump.
OVER THE TOP
All-American Marcus Calleja (Sr./Liberal, Kan.) is ranked 21st nationally after clearing 6-09.75 (2.08m) at the Wichita State KT Woodman Classic. This is his first trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships after he placed sixth nationally at the Indoor National Championships in the high jump. He is an All-Region performer in the high jump.
TEAM TIME
Derwin Hall (Sr./Blue Springs, Mo.) and Vincent Howze (Sr./Raymore, Mo.) will join Etheridge and Richardson on the 400m relay team. They clocked a 40.76 at the Drake Relays to rank 13th nationally this spring. They are ranked third all-time at Emporia State in the 400m relay. This is Hall's fourth trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships as a member of the relay. He was an individual participant in the 100m in 2011. He placed sixth in the 60m dash indoors this year. This is Howze's fourth trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He was a member of the 400m relay team in 2010. He placed sixth in the 200m last year individually. He competed in the 400m hurdles in 2009 and 2010, finishing third nationally in 2009.
LIKE A LAZER
School record holder Sara Dunkin (So./Topeka, Kan.) is the top ranked performer for the Emporia State women. She is ranked fifth in the javelin with a mark of 151-07 (46.20m) set at the ESU Spring Open. She placed fourth in the MIAA this season and was ninth in the javelin last year in Pueblo as a true freshman. She is an All-Region performer in the javelin.
SOONER THAN SOME
Carmen King (So./Norman, Okla.) is ranked 14th in the long jump after going 19-06.00 (5.94m) at the Sam Williams Qualifier. The MIAA Champion in the event at 19-01.25 (5.82m), she had a wind aided jump of 19-07.00 (5.97m) at the Sam Williams Qualifier as well. This is her second trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships after finishing 13th in the 100m last year as a true freshman. She is an All-Region performer in the long jump and 400m relay.
NIK NAK
Nikki Wetstein (Jr./Imperial, Mo.) qualified 15th in the 100m hurdles after breaking her own school record with a 13.80 at the Sam Williams Qualifier. She was sixth in the event at the MIAA Championships after turning in the second best time of 13.92 in the prelims. She was 12th in 60m hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Championships this year. This is her second trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships after placing 17th in the triple jump as a freshman in 2011. She is an All-Region performer in the 100m hurdles.
THE LOWE DOWN
Misty Lowe (Jr./Paxico, Kan.) is the first Emporia State women to make it to the national meet in the shot put since Rachel Goetz won the national championship in 2004. Lowe is ranked 17th with a mark of 46-09.50 (14.26m) at the ESU MidWeek Open. She was fifth in the shot at the MIAA Championships. This is her first trip to the NCAA Division II National Championships.
MAR-CHEETA
Marqueita Marisette (Sr./Topeka, Kan.) is ranked 21st in the 400m with a time of 55.76 set at the Sam Williams Qualifier. She was fifth in the 400m and fourth in the 200m at the MIAA Championships this spring. She will also run on both Emporia State relay teams that made the national meet. This is her first trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She was 14th in the 400m and a member of the 4x400m relay that placed 11th at this year's NCAA Indoor Championships. She is an All-Region performer in both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
TEAM TIME X 2
The 4x400m relay team of Marisette, Peyton Weiss (So./Russell, Kan.), Lindsay Kunkel (Jr./Fayette, Mo.) and Jackie Jacobs (Sr./Lenexa, Kan.) ran a season's best 3:44.65 at the Drake Relays to rank ninth nationally. They were second in the MIAA Outdoor Championships. The foursome qualified for the Indoor Championships and placed 11th overall. This is the first trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships for Weiss, Kunkel and Jacobs. King replaces Kunkel on the 4x100m relay that is ranked 16th after running a 46.60 at the Sam Williams Qualifier. They were second in the MIAA Championships to Lincoln. Both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays were named All-Region.
ALL-REGION HONORS
The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) awards All-Region honors to the top five individuals and top three relays in each of the eight NCAA regions. Emporia State had nine men earn ten honors and seven women earn 11 honors this year. As a conference the MIAA had 86 men's honorees and 71 women's honorees.
ESU HISTORY IN THIS YEAR'S EVENTS
•Emporia State has only had one NCAA Division II All-American in the men's 100m. Josh Schuler finished second in the 2011 championships.
•The Hornets have had three NCAA Division II All-Americans in the women's 400m outdoors, the last coming in 1996 when Magali Schneider placed third and Deandra Doubrava was seventh.
•Andrew Etheridge is one of three Hornets to earn NCAA Division II All-American honors in the men's 110m hurdles. He was the national champion in 2011 while Dustin Brock finished third in 2001.
•Emporia State has only had one NCAA Division II All-American in the women's 100m hurdles. Nikki Runnebaum was sixth in the 2001 championships.
•The Hornet men's 400m relay earned NCAA Division II All-American honors in 2009 and 2011. The 2011 team of Derwin Hall, Josh Schuler, Andrew Etheridge, and Shjuan Richardson finished third.
•Emporia State earned NCAA Division II All-American honors in back to back years on the women's 400m relay in 2005 and 2006. The 2005 team was the highest finisher as Courtney Bruna, Alicia Burns, Ashley Melichar and Shannon Butler placed sixth.
•The Hornet women's 1600m relay earned NCAA Division II Outdoor All-American honors in four straight years from 1996-99. The 1996 team of Deandra Doubrava, Magali Schneider, Kari Pittman and Jessica Oberg were national runners-up.
•Emporia State has only had one NCAA Division II Outdoor All-American in the men's high jump. Craig Saalfeld was the national runner-up in 2008. The Hornets have had six indoor All-Americans in the event.
•The Hornets have had three NCAA Division II All-Americans in the men's outdoor long jump. Joseph Herron had the best finish, placing fifth in 1998 while the most recent was Chris Peoples eighth place finishi in 2005.
•Emporia State has earned three NCAA Division II All-American honors in the outdoor women's long jump. Deandra Doubrava was sixth in 1996 and Brooke Kent matched that finish in 2008. Kent has the most recent honor, placing seventh in 2009.
•The women's shot put has been one of the most celebrated events for Emporia State. Three women have won four outdoor national championships for the Hornets - Laura Rand in 1995, Heather Leverington in 1999 and 2001, and Rachel Goetz in 2004. Emporia State women earned All-American honors outdoors ten times between 1994 and 2004.
•Emporia State has had six NCAA Division II All-Americans in the women's javelin, including the 1997 national champion Joyce Burnett. Connie Philips is the most recent All-American in the event placing sixth in 2005.
•The Hornets have had two men earn All-American honors in the NCAA Division II decathlon. Tony Granillo placed third in 2011, a year after Craig Saalfeld placed seventh. The top two individuals listed on the Emporia State career list both had troubles at the national meet. School record holder Tim Vietti was in third place after seven events when he failed to clear a bar in the pole vault on his home track in 1995 while David Humbarger was not able to finish the competition in 1999, again at Welch Stadium.
TOP TEAM FINISHES
The Hornet men climbed the podium in 2011 with a fourth place national finish in Turlock, Calif. They have scored at the national meet in ten straight years and 18 of the 20 years they have been eligible for the Division II Championships.
The Emporia State women claimed the fourth place trophy in 1999 at Emporia State's Welch Stadium. They had a string of 18 straight years scoring at the national meet snapped last year.
