Over 100 Emporia State Newcomers Earn MIAA Academic Honors

30 first year Hornets earn MIAA Scholar-Athlete accolades

June 30, 2026-The MIAA has announced its academic awards for transfers and newcomers during the 2025-26 school year. Emporia State had 110 new student-athletes recognized for their work in the classroom during the past academic year.
 
Eight Hornets earned the MIAA Academic Excellence Award. Men's basketball player Jack Weigus, men's track & field athlete Trey Wichman, softball player Hannah Butterbaugh, women's tennis players Erin Cahill and Giulia Russu, and women's track & field athletes Ella Crain and Ava Makley all maintained a 4.00 GPA in their first year at Emporia State. An MIAA Academic Excellence Award recipient must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of at least 4.00 at the certifying member institution. The honoree also must have at least two terms of grades reported at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms.
 
Six Hornets were named MIAA Scholar-Athletes. Baseball player Evan Abbott, football player Landon Boss, softball players Hannah Butterbaugh and Addison Callaway, soccer player Ella Favot and volleyball player Lavra Krizanic all earned MIAA Scholar-Athlete recognition in their first year with the Hornets. Abbott was the MIAA Freshman of the Year and a Third-Team All-MIAA selection in the outfield while maintaining a 3.63 GPA in accounting during his freshman season with the Hornets. Boss was the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year at linebacker and a First-Team All-MIAA pick with a 3.70 GPA in business. Butterbaugh earned All-MIAA honorable mention at pitcher with a 4.00 GPA in biology to achieve the triple crown of academic honors from the Association. Calloway was a Third-Team All-MIAA selection at designated player and holds a 3.62 GPA in health and human performance. Favot earned Second-Team All-MIAA honors in the midfield while maintaining a 3.78 GPA in biology.  Krizanic was the MIAA Freshman of the Year and was a Second-Team All-MIAA pick at outside hitter to go with a 3.72 GPA in business. A Scholar-Athlete is an individual that has a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.50 or better at the certifying member institution. They must also have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms.

A total of 110 Hornets representing all 15 programs earned MIAA Academic Honor Roll honors. To be recognized on the Academic Honor Roll list, one must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.00 or above at the certifying member institution. The individual must also have at least two terms of grades reported at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms. A total of 1,190 first-year MIAA student-athletes from all 14 MIAA institutions and two affiliate schools received academic honors for their efforts in the classroom. 
 
Including the returners that were announced following each sports season Emporia State had 327 MIAA Academic Honor Roll awards, 30 MIAA Scholar-Athletes and 22 MIAA Academic Excellence Awards. Across all sports the Hornets posted a 3.47 combined GPA during the 2025-26 season.
