September 17, 2026-Emporia State University has announced Dr. Tyler Goad will serve as Emporia State's next Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) to the NCAA and the MIAA.
 
"I'm really excited to take on the FAR role at Emporia State," said Goad. "Athletics and academics have both been a big part of my career, so this feels like a natural opportunity to bring those two areas together. I'm looking forward to working with our student athletes, coaches, faculty and administration to help make sure our students have a great experience at ESU and are successful both in the classroom and in competition."
 
Dr. Goad is an Associate Professor of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at Emporia State and serves as the Health and Physical Education Program Coordinator. As faculty athletics representative, he brings together his backgrounds in athletics and academics to support student athlete well-being, academic success, and the connection between athletics and the broader university community.
 
"We are excited to welcome Tyler Goad on as our faculty athletics representative," said Emporia State Athletic Director Steve Rodecap. "We are confident that his leadership and strong reputation among the faculty will be an asset for Hornet Athletics and the entire university."
 
Dr. Goad has a long-standing connection to ESU Athletics, including previous experience with the Men's Basketball and Women's Soccer strength and conditioning programs and service as the Faculty Champion for Women's Softball. His work at ESU has emphasized student advocacy, advising, assessment, academic program development, shared governance, and community engagement.
 
A big part of his work at Emporia State has centered on student success, advising, and program development. Dr. Goad has supervised field experiences and student teaching, worked with accreditation and assessment data, and served in several roles focused on curriculum and student support. His faculty evaluations have consistently highlighted the ability to create supportive learning environments and a commitment to helping students succeed, which fits closely with the FAR's role as an advocate and independent resource for student-athletes.
 
Dr. Goad also brings strong experience in university service, leadership, and shared governance. As HPE Program Coordinator and through service on a variety of university and college committees, he has worked across campus with faculty, administrators, and students. That experience is useful in a FAR role because the position requires someone who can communicate and work effectively with faculty, athletics staff, administrators, students, and other campus offices. His community engagement, student advising, and leadership of events such as Special Athletics Track & Field Day also align well with Division II's emphasis on service, leadership, and connecting athletics with the university and broader community.
 
The Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) serves as the vital bridge between academics and athletics, advocating for student-athlete success while helping ensure institutional integrity, academic excellence and NCAA compliance.
 
Dr. Goad replaces Dr. Terri Summey who has served as the Hornets FAR since 2019.

Dr. Goad earned both his undergraduate degree and masters in Health & Physical Education from Emporia State. Additionally, he served as a graduate teaching assistant in the HPER department from 2012-2014. He earned his Ph.D. in Kinesiology from West Virginia University, with teaching and research interests in physical education, educational technology, student success, and teacher preparation.
