April 2, 2026-The Midwest Classic started off well for the Emporia State track and field teams with three provisional qualifiers in the javelin and a leader after day one of the heptathlon.
 
Brooks Lowe unleashed a throw of 69.85m (229-02) on his second to last throw to win the men's javelin.  The provisional qualifier is a personal best for him and ranks fourth all-time at Emporia State. He is currently ranked fourth in the nation as of Thursday evening.
 
Mitch Budke also had a provisional qualifier in the men's javelin.  His throw of 63.19m (207-03) was good for fifth place.
 
Harper Schoendaller had a provisional qualifier of 43.15m (141-7) to place fourth in the women's javelin throw.
 
Lou Dumas is in first place after four events of the women's heptathlon. She started the day with a second place time of 15.09 in the 100m hurdles and had a mark of 11.55m (37-10.75) to win the shot put portion of the competition.
 
Scarlett Begley is in sixth place with 2662 points. Her best finish came when she cleared 1.60m (5-03.00) in the high jump. Arriana Johnson is in eighth overall with 2622 points. Her best finish was fifth with a time of 26.80 in the 200m.
 
Luke Hampl is the lone Hornet competing in the decathlon this week. He is in ninth place with 2809 points. His best finish was clearing 1.81m (5-11.25) to place third in the high jump.
 
The Midwest Classic continues on Friday starting with the multi-events at 9:30 a.m. with field events beginning at 10:30 a.m. and running events starting at 1:00 p.m.
