Emporia State plays host to Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western during AFE Awareness Weekend at the Trusler Sports Complex.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hornet pitching staff allowed just two runs on ten hits and the offense took advantage of a Broncho error in the seventh to post a 3-2 win over #18 Central Oklahoma in Edmond.
UCO scored first on an RBI double by Brooklyn Ryan two batters into the bottom of the first but
Chloe Wilson was able to leave her stranded with three straight outs. Emporia State was able to tie the score in the fourth when
Addison Callaway reached on a one out bunt single, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on
Brynley Smith's single to left center.
Juliana D Luna walked to lead off the top of the seventh.
Kinsey Perine laid down a bunt and Broncho third baseman Sherri Mason's throw hit her in the helmet and ricocheted away allowing De Luna to score from first and Perine to get to second base. A
Taryn Burkhardt ground out advanced Perine to third and
Sydney Wagner gave ESU an insurance run with a single to right field.
Izzy Sloan, who had come on in relief of Wilson to start the fifth, got two outs to start the bottom of the seventh Rylee Anglen reached on a bunt single and Rylee Lemos followed with a single to put the tying run on base. Brooklyn Ryan singled back up the middle to score Anglen, making it 3-2, and the Hornets brought Wilson back in to get the final out as she foul out to end the game.

Ally Miller with Burkhardt getting a double while Wagner and Smith each had an RBI.
Izzy Sloan gave up one run on five hits in 2.2 innings to earn the save while Wilson worked 4.1 innings around her and finished the game to get her first save.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFONS
Missouri Western is 24-15, 5-11 in the MIAA and have lost seven straight. They are third in the MIAA and 27th in the nation in home runs per game. Ashlyn Finarty is sixth in the MIAA in home runs with 11 on the year. Harley Pruetting is second in the MIAA in strikeouts per seven innings.
SERIES HISTORY
The Hornets lead the all-time series 63-43. The Hornets 8-5 win under Coach Hill in the 2024 season is the only Emporia State win in the last ten games between the two squads. Only eight of the last 25 games between the two schools have been played in Emporia.

Megan Hill is 23-14 in her first season as the head coach for Emporia State. She joined the coaching staff in 2024,and went 30-15 to close out that season as acting coach while
April Rosales was on maternity leave. She was 1-1 against both Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western that season.

Hannah Butterbaugh (Fr./Lenexa, Kan.) has made an immediate impact to the Hornet pitching staff in her freshman campaign. She is 10-5 with a 2.03 ERA and team best 49 strikeouts.
Izzy Sloan (Jr./Indianola, IA) has become a staple in relief this season, as 18 of her 23 appearances have come in relief. She is 2-2 with a 3.45 ERA and her three saves are fourth in the MIAA and 25th in the nation.

Avery Brewer (Jr./Jenks, Okla.) has started 35 games and is hitting .33 with six home runs and 28 RBI this season. She delivered the walk-off home run in the eighth inning of game one against #18 Rogers State.
Second baseman
Brynley Smith (So./Wichita, Kan.) has made 25 starts in 28 games played. She is hitting .329 with four home runs, including a three-run home run against Augustana. Smith has 16 RBI, 16 runs scored and has been hit by pitch at team high six times.
Shortstop
Sydney Wagner (So./Buda, Texas) has started all 37 games and holds a .270 average. She has scored 23 runs, drawn 11 walks and is reaching base at a .331 clip. Wagner matched her career-high with three RBI in game two against Drury.
Third baseman
Brooke Flewelling (Jr./Holton, Kan.) is leading the MIAA and ranks eighth in the nation with 14 home runs while her .818 slugging percentage is third in the MIAA and her 99 total bases are second in the conference. She is ranked third on the Emporia State single season home run list and needs three to tie Miranda Campbell (17 HR in 2008) for second. Her 29 career homers are tied for fourth on the Hornet career list.
Karli Wehunt (Jr./Shidler, Okla.) has made 12 starts at second base and is hitting .262 this season with two doubles, one home run, five RBI and six runs scored.
Mallory Moore (So./Flower Mound, Texas) has 12 starts this season and is hitting .262 while reaching base at a .311 clip.

Elina Bartlett (Jr./Cheney, Kan.) has made 31 starts in her first season with the Hornets after transferring from Barton CC. She has a .402 OBP while driving in 18 runs and scoring 15 of her own. Bartlett has eight multi-hit games this season including a three for four effort at Neb.-Kearney.
Taryn Burkhardt (Sr./Silver Lake, Kan.) leads the MIAA in stolen base percentage with 25 steals in 26 attempts. She is sixth in the MIAA in stolen bases and triples. Burkhardt has six multi-steal games this season including two games with three stolen bases.
Kinsey Perine (So./Rossville, Kan.) is hitting .290 with a .327 OBP this season while starting 33 games in right field. She has four triples this season to rank third in the MIAA.
Juliana De Luna (Jr./San Antonio, Texas) is in her third year with the Hornets and made nine starts. She has a .375 OBP with seven walks in 32 plate appearances and has scored a six runs with two steals and five RBI.
HORNET HISTORY
Emporia State has qualified for NCAA Regional play 13 times and finished as the NCAA Division II National Runners-up in 2006 and 2008. ESU won the NAIA National Championship in 1983 and 1984 and won the AIAW National Championship in 1980.
The Hornets were MIAA regular season champions four straight years from 2005-08 and MIAA Tournament champions seven straight years running from 2004-10. In the 21st Century, Emporia State has claimed the regular season title eight times (2005-08, 2010-12, 2014) and the tournament title nine times (2004-10, 2012, 2018).
