Connor Deters became just the fourth Hornet to reach 18 meters in the shot put to highlight Saturday's action for Emporia State track and field at the Grizzly Gold Invite in El Dorado, Kan. He was one of two provisional qualifiers for the Hornets on Saturday.

Deters won the men's shot put with a provisional qualifying mark of 18.03m (59-01.75) that will move him into third in the MIAA and seventh in the nation this season as of Saturday afternoon. He is currently ranked fourth all-time at Emporia State.

Zach Sulzen-Watson joined Deters with a provisional mark in the shot. He went 16.85m (55-03.50) to finish fourth in the event. He also finished second in the hammer throw with a personal best of 55.04m (180-07) that ranks eighth all-time at Emporia State.

The Emporia State women had three top four finishes in El Dorado.

Madison Vermetten was fourth with a toss of 50.74m (166-06) in the women's hammer throw.

Alexia Lewis was fourth with a time 24.96 in the women's 200m and finished fifth with a time of 12.08 in the 100m.

Arriana Johnson also had a fourth place finish with a time of 1:07.26 in the 400m hurdles.

Emporia State will return to Welch Stadium and Witten Track starting on Friday with the ESU Relays. The high school portion of the meet will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the collegiate events starting at 4:30 p.m. Saturday's events will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will have high school and collegiate events mixed together on the schedule. Over 1500 competitors are expected to come to Emporia for the two day meet.
