STILL ON THE ROAD
The Emporia State tennis teams will continue their road tour this weekend with the women playing at Central Oklahoma on Friday and both teams heading to Newman on Saturday.Â
LAST SERVE
The Emporia State women dropped their third straight dual to a nationally ranked swaud as they fell 7-0 at Florida Southern in Lakeland, Fla.
The Hornets dropped all three doubles matches with
Yuliya Klimova and
Carla Paul Piquer falling 6-4 to #49 Kennedi Brown and Josie Holderbach at the #1 spot.
The Mocs then swept the singles play with Limova taking Ronja Scheuermann to a tiebreaker in the first set before falling 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 at the #2 position.Â
The Emporia State men got a win in singles and took two other matches to a third set before falling to #8 Florida Southern at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
The Mocs won all three doubles matches with Hornets
Roko Kacer and
Dhruveer Grover falling in a third set tiebreaker.
Florida Southern won in straight sets at #4-6 singles but the #1-3 singles matches all went to a third set.
Mostafa Elbasnaly fell 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 to #8 Mario Garoz at #1 and
Luke West lost 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 at #3 before
Diego Calvo came from behind to post a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 win at #2 singles.
The Hornet men were scheduled to play Sterling on March 26, but the Warriors canceled due to a lack of players available for the match.

THE COACH
John Blackburn is 27-22 in his third season as the head men's coach and Director of Tennis at Emporia State. He spent the previous eight seasons as the head coach at NCAA Division III Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C. He went 117-58 overall with a 54-4 record in conference play, winning three regular season conference championships, two conference tourney championships and made two NCAA Tournament appearances. He was also a head coach at Eastern Illinois, Coker College and Palm Beach Atlantic.Â
Former Hornet CyCy Peyroche is 20-27 in her third full season as the permanent coach of the Emporia State women's program. She took over as the interim coach for both teams in December of 2022. She went 6-9 with the men's team and 5-13 in women's action as the interim coach. Peyroche was 23-15 in singles play during her three years as a player for ESU. Â
QUICK LOOK AT THE HORNETS
The Hornet men are 6-6 in the spring season with five of the losses to nationally ranked teams. Ten of their 12 duals have been away from the Kossover Family Tennis Center.
Diego Calvo is 9-3 against four year opponents this spring and is 5-0 at the #3 spot.
Roko Kacer is 7-3 in singles play with a 4-2 record at #6 and 3-1 mark at #5.
Mostafa Elbasnaly is 5-1 at #2 singles and 8-4 overall this spring against four year foes. Â
Luke West and
Anton Sarunic are ranked #41 in the nation this week and are 3-2 at #1 doubles. Â West has partnered with
Duvan Santiago Torres to go 5-0 in doubles play. Sarunic and Calvo are 3-1 in doubles play with a 2-1 mark at the #1 spot.Â
The Emporia State women are 6-5 on the spring season. They have three returners led by all-MIAA performers
Giovanna Ferreira and
Yuliya Klimova along with MIAA A-Game Scholar
Sheriden Wichman. Ferreira is 3-3 overall and 2-0 at #2 singles this spring while Wichman is 5-5 overall with a 2-1 mark at both #3. Newcomer
Erin Cahill is 6-3 this spring, going 3-3 at #6 singles with wins at #3 and #5 as well.
Giulia Russu is 6-3 in doubles play going 4-2 with
Ana Fatjo Coll at #3 this spring.
KNOW THE FOES
Central Oklahoma is 9-2, 1-0 in the MIAA. Mei Hasegawa is ranked #30 and Pete Komada is #56 in the nation in singles. Together they are ranked #18 in doubles.
The Newman women are just 0-1 this spring while the Jet men are 0-2.
UP NEXT
The Emporia State women return to Emporia on April 2 to take on Fort Hays State while both teams will play host to Neb.-Kearney on April 3.
