Hornet Tennis Teams Fall To Nationally Ranked NWMSU Teams

Ferreira gets win in singles and doubles for ESU women

April 19, 2026-Emporia State tennis fell to nationally ranked Northwest Missouri in both men's and women's action on Sunday at the Kossover Family Tennis Center.

Women NWMSU 6, ESU 1
Giovanna Ferreira highlighted the day for the Hornet women in their loss to the #42 Bearcats. She picked up wins in both doubles and singles on the day. 
Ferreira teamed with Carla Paul Piquer to win 6-4 at #1 doubles over the Bearcats Laura Prieto Sieiro and Polina Agapitova.  Northwest Missouri won the other two doubles matches, 6-2 at #2 and 6-3 at #3 to earn the doubles point.
The Bearcats won in straight sets at #4, #3 and #2 singles to clinch the dual before Ferriera won 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) over Minu Nonaka at #1 singles. NWMSU then won at #5 and #6 to close out the dual.
 
Men NWMSU 6, ESU 1
The Emporia State men had two sets go to a tiebreaker and another match go to a third set super tiebreak before falling to #50 Northwest Missouri.
The Hornets fell 6-2 at both #1 doubles while Diego Calvo and Gwendal Mazuay won a 6-4 decision at #2 but the Hornets dropped a 6-4 loss at #3 to give the Bearcats the 1-0 early lead.
Northwest Missouri won in straight sets at #3 and #1 singles to go up 3-0, with Mostafa Elbasnaly falling 7-6 (10-8), 6-2 at #1. The Bearcats clinched with a win at #2 as Anton Sarunic fell 6-2, 7-6 (7-0). Emporia State got a win at #4 singles with Luke West getting a win when Bernardo Henriques retired with West leading 2-6, 6-4, 3-2 in the third. NWMSU won in straight sets at #6 before Alexis Mattenberger fell 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) at #5 to close out the dual.
 
UP NEXT
Emporia State will head in opposite directions next Friday, April 24 as the women travel south to Northeastern State and the men travel north to take on Augustana.  The women will begin play at 11:00 a.m. in Tahlequah, Okla. while the men will get started at 2:00 p.m. in Sioux Falls, S.D.
