11 Emporia State Softball Players Earn MIAA Academic Honors

Garnett and Harrison earn Academic Excellence Awards, Flewelling a Scholar-Athlete

June 5, 2025- Emporia State had two Academic Excellence Award winners and an MIAA Scholar-Athlete to highlight 12 players that earned academic honors from the conference for softball.
 
Haley Garnett and Jordan Harrison were both named MIAA Academic Excellence Award winners.  Garnett has a 4.00 GPA as a graduate student in business while posting a .331 on base percentage with two home runs, eight doubles and 21 RBI. Harrison is a senior with a 4.00 in accounting that went 16-7 in the circle with a 3.18 ERA and 120 strikeouts on the season.
 
An Academic Excellence Award recipient must have a grade point average used by the institution for NCAA academic certification of at least 4.00 at the certifying member institution. The honoree also must have at least two terms of grades reported at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms.
 
Brooke Flewelling was named an MIAA Scholar-Athlete as a sophomore after posting a 3.53 GPA in nursing and was an Honorable Mention All-MIAA performer at third base. She hit .301 with 11 home runs, and 43 RBI on the season.
 
To qualify as a Scholar-Athlete an individual must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.50 at the certifying member institution. The student-athlete must have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms. If competing in a championship sport of the MIAA, the student-athlete must also earn All-MIAA honors from the 2024-25 season. 
 
In addition to Garnett, Harrison and Flewelling Emporia State had nine other returners named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
 
Avery Brewer is a sophomore infielder/designated player with a 3.78 GPA in health and human performance. She hit .243 on the season with a .364 on base percentage.
 
Kylie Chester has a 3.60 GPA as a sophomore in elementary education. The outfielder played in 26 games on the season.
 
Juliana De Luna is a sophomore applied criminology major with a 3.16 GPA. She hit .270 on the year with 26 RBI and 28 runs scored.
 
Gracie McCarty is a sophomore outfielder with a 3.89 GPA in biology. She started two games and saw action in nine games.
 
Ally Miller maintains a 3.56 GPA in health and human performance as a sophomore catcher. She hit .303 on the season with eight doubles and 24 RBI.
 
Gracie Rabe was a senior nursing major with a 3.77 GPA. She had a team best 2.70 ERA and three saves with 80 strikeouts.
 
Kennedy Topping has a 3.89 GPA in nursing as a sophomore infielder. She hit .300 on the year with two home runs and 15 RBI.
 
Jayda VanAckeren holds a 3.88 GPA as a senior in health and human performance. She was 5-4 with a 3.84 ERA in the circle.
 
Karli Wehunt is a health and human performance major with a 3.81 GPA. She is a utility player that saw action in 14 games with seven starts.
 
To be recognized on the Academic Honor Roll, one must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.00 at the certifying member institution. The individual must also have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms.
 
These academic awards do not include first-year freshmen or first-year transfers. The MIAA will release its Newcomer Academic Awards from the 2024-25 academic year in late June.
