DISC GOLF CAPITAL
Emporia State will welcome over 150 individuals representing 14 schools to the Mid-American Regional Championships presented by Dynamic Discs. The tournament will take place at Champions Landing and Jones East courses. The second ranked Hornet men and women will be joined by #3 Illinois State, #15 Minnesota-Duluth, #19 Kansas State and #20 Wisconsin on the men's side while #11 Hesston will take part in the women's competition.
LAST TIME OUT
Emporia State earned their bid to the D1Men's Collegiate Disc Golf Championships but came up one stroke short of the tournament title at the Midwest Collegiate Takeover II presented by Ledgestone.
The foursome of
TJ Reel,
Isaiah Esquivel,
Carter Ahrens and Mica Tatro shot -29 on the weekend to finish one stroke behind the University of Cincinnati in the two day event in Morton, Ill.
After the first team round on Saturday they were tied at -14 heading into singles play. Cincinnati combined for an eight under in singles compared to Emporia State's seven under as the Bearcats led by a stroke after day one.
Sunday's final round saw Cincinnati birdie the first four holes to take a four stroke lead. Starting on #8, Emporia State birdied six of eight holes to take a one stroke lead with three holes left. The Bearcats got birdies on 16 and 17 to take a one stroke lead while the Hornets made par.
With the second place showing Emporia State secured their bid to the College Disc Golf Championships scheduled for April 8-11 in Rock Hill, S.C.
THE COACH
Eric McCabe is the first coach in the history of the Emporia State competitive disc golf team. An Emporia native and the 2010 PDGA World Champion, McCabe led the Hornet men to a national runner-up finish in their first year while the women placed 16th nationally. He has led every team during his three years to at least a Top 16 finish in the nation with a national runner-up in both the men's and women's team standings and an Individual national champion.
From 2001-16 McCabe won 84 PDGA sanctioned events with 173 top three finishes. He has five top-25 finishes in PDGA World Championship competition, 13 top-25 finishes in other majors, and placed in the top-25 of 54 National Tour events during his career.
ABOUT THE HORNETS
Emporia State is ranked second in the nation in both men's and women's team standings.
The Hornets will be represented in the D1 men's competition by
Carter Ahrens,
TJ Reel, and
Micah Tatro while
Isaiah Esquivel,
Caden Stucky,
Grant Yoder and
Joshua Sterner will compete for the D2 men.
Ahrens is ranked second in the nation in individual play while
TJ Reel is ranked seventh and
Micah Tatro is ranked 15th in the nation. Emporia State and Cincinnati are the only schools with two players ranked in the top ten.
There will be four women's teams competing for Emporia State.
Atlanta Krueger and
Maya Ringgold will be ESU Gold,
Isabella Parker and
Madeline Joiner make up ESU Black, the ESU Silver team will be made up of
Grace Watson and
Avangelena Campbell while
Olivia Evans and
Sariah Pittenger-Reed will be on ESU White.
Krueger is the defending national champion and top ranked women's player in the nation. She is joined in the top ten by
Isabella Parker at #10 while
Madeline Joiner is ranked 16
th in the nation.

Emporia State swept the top two spots in both the men's and women's competitions at the Mid-American Regional Disc Golf Championships presented by Dynamic Discs.
The Hornet Men's Gold Team of
Justin Farrell,
TJ Reel,
Cade Kohlmeier and
Micah Tatro shot 11 under on Sunday at Jones Park to finish the tournament at -29 and take the championship by seven strokes over the Emporia State Black Team of
Isaiah Esquivel,
Grant Yoder,
Joshua Sterner and
Caden Stucky. The Black team shot -8 on Sunday to overtake Oklahoma Christian who shot -5 on Sunday and -20 for the tournament.
The Emporia State Gold duo of
Atlanta Krueger and
Madeline Joiner dominated the women's competition. They shot -6 on Sunday at Peter Pan Park and were the only team to finish below par for the tournament, finishing one under.
Maya Ringgold and
Rebekah Thompson shot +2 for ESU Black in the final round to finish +18 to edge Hesston by one stroke.
Grace Watson made up the Emporia State White team and shot +29 for the tourney to place fourth.
THE FORMAT
Singles play will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday with the women playing at Champions Landing and the men at Jones East. The first team round will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday with the final team round set to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday at Champions Landing.
