EARLY SPRING START
The nationally ranked Emporia State disc golf teams play host to their first collegiate competition of the spring season at Peter Pan Park.
LAST TIME OUT
The Emporia State disc golf teams swept all six titles at the Mid-American Regional Disc Golf Championship presented by Dynamic Discs.
Playing a player down the trio of
Carter Ahrens,
TJ Reel and
Micah Tatro birdied 15 of 18 holes on Sunday to move from third to first in the tournament. The #2 ranked Hornets would end at -29 for the tournament to finish two strokes in front of Liberty.
The women's competition was all Emporia State at the top of board.
Madeline Joiner and
Isabella Parker had a two stroke lead over
Atlanta Krueger and
Maya Ringgold headed into Sunday's final round. That would be the final spread after Sunday's round as well with both teams shooting two under in the final round. Joiner and Parker would finish the weekend at two under while Krueger and Ringgold finished at even par. The duo of Josalyn Wipf and Lily Corkill from #11 Hesston placed third at +21 for the tournament.
The Hornets D2 men's team of
Caden Stucky,
Grant Yoder,
Joshua Sterner and
Isaiah Esquivel had a seven stroke lead going into Sunday's final round and would finish with a seven point victory. Emporia State and Wichita State would both shoot seven under on Sunday as the Hornets finished -24 for the tournament while the Shockers were -17 on the two days.
Micah Tatro won the men's D1 individual title while defending national champion
Atlanta Krueger won the women's championship.
Grant Yoder rounded out the singles wins with a title in D2 men's competition.
THE COACH
Eric McCabe is the first coach in the history of the Emporia State competitive disc golf team. An Emporia native and the 2010 PDGA World Champion, McCabe led the Hornet men to a national runner-up finish in their first year while the women placed 16th nationally. He has led every team during his three years to at least a Top 16 finish in the nation with a national runner-up in both the men's and women's team standings and an Individual national champion.
From 2001-16 McCabe won 84 PDGA sanctioned events with 173 top three finishes. He has five top-25 finishes in PDGA World Championship competition, 13 top-25 finishes in other majors, and placed in the top-25 of 54 National Tour events during his career.
ABOUT THE HORNETS
Emporia State is ranked second in the nation in the men's D1 and women's team standings and have the top ranked team in the nation in D2.
Carter Ahrens is ranked #1 in the men's D1 national rankings with
Micah Tatro ranked sixth and
TJ Reel ranked eighth nationally. Defending national champion
Atlanta Krueger is ranked #1 and
Isabella Parker is ranked #2 in the women's national rankings while
Madeline Joiner is ranked #10 in the nation.
The Hornets will be represented in the D1 men's competition by
Carter Ahrens,
TJ Reel,
Micah Tatro and Jaden Rye while
Isaiah Esquivel,
Caden Stucky,
Grant Yoder and
Joshua Sterner will compete for the D2 men.
There will be two women's teams competing for Emporia State in a four player format.
Atlanta Krueger,
Maya Ringgold,
Isabella Parker and
Madeline Joiner will be ESU Gold, while
Grace Watson,
Avangelena Campbell,
Olivia Evans and
Sariah Pittenger-Reed make up ESU Black.
THE FORMAT
Singles play will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the team competition set to begin at around 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at Peter Pan Park in Emporia.
