May 15, 2024-Throughout the month of May Emporia State Athletics will take a look at the events that make up the 2024 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships.   This will include a look at the reigning national champion, the top ranked competitor this season, the NCAA championships record, the Welch Stadium record and any Emporia State athletes that have provisionally qualified for the national meet.  Day 15 features the 5000m run.

The finals for the men's 5000m run will run at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25 with the women's final set to follow at 5:25 p.m.

As of May 13, Romain Legendre ran the fastest 5000m in NCAA Division II history when he was clocked at 13:16.53 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif. on April 11. Gracie Hyde of Adams State leads the nation in the 5000m at 15:43.34 set at the Payton Jordan Invitational on April 26 in Palo Alto, Calif.  However her teammate Brianna Robles ran the second fastest time in Division II history of 15:30.84 at the Sound Running Track Fest at Occidental College in Los Angeles, Calif. on May 11. That time does not count as a qualifying time since Adams State was the only college team competing in the distance festival.
