May 8, 2024-Throughout the month of May Emporia State Athletics will take a look at the 22 events that make up the 2024 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. This will include a look at the reigning national champion, the top ranked competitor this season, the NCAA championships record, the Welch Stadium record and any Emporia State athletes that have provisionally qualified for the national meet. Day eight features the javelin.
The men's javelin will be held at 10:30 a.m. with the women to follow at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 25. The javelin runway is located just northeast of Welch Stadium. It has been the site of two of the top 25 all-time marks in NCAA Division II history.
As of May 8, Southern Connecticut State's Jordan Davis leads the men with an all-time Division II best mark of 83.77m (274-10) set at the Texas Relays. The top women's mark is 50.54m (165-10) by Molly Olson of Azusa Pacific.

Emporia State has won national championships in both the men's and women's javelin. Joyce Burnett won the 1997 national championship with a toss of 48.06m (157-08) while using the old javelin. Andy Vogelsburg won the 2006 national championship with a school record throw of 74.75m (245-03) competing on the Emporia State runway. He is still ranked ninth in NCAA Division II history.
Mele Taula is currently ranked eighth in the nation in the women's javelin with a school record toss of 46.84m (153-08) at the Gorilla Classic.
Aidan Hicks hit the men's provisional mark with a throw of 59.23m (194-04) at the MIAA Championships last weekend. He is ranked 45th nationally.
Emporia State's Welch Stadium and Zola Witten Track have been selected as the host site for the 2024 and 2026 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. It will be the fourth and fifth time that Welch Stadium has played host to the national championships.
Welch Stadium previously served as the host site for the National Championships in 1995, 1999 and 2006 with the first meet in 1995 bringing 450 student-athletes to Emporia. The 2024 and 2026 meets are scheduled to bring 754 student-athletes, nearly 200 coaches and over 100 officials to the Flint Hills over the Memorial Day weekend.
During championship week, the NCAA Committee will come to Emporia on Monday with the first practice time available on Tuesday. Wednesday of championship week will see a variety of coaches and officials meetings before the actual competition begins on Thursday. The meet will wrap up on Saturday evening.
