February 3, 2024-Emporia State had two event champions, six top eight finishers and four provisional qualifiers on Saturday at the WU Open and Multis in Topeka.

The men's heptathlon got things started for the Hornets with a pair of provisional qualifiers and a top five all-time mark at Emporia State.Â
Aren Trost finished fifth overall with a provisional qualifying total of 4941 points. He moved past Tony Granillo, who scored 4,940 points at the 2011 MIAA Championships to move into fifth on the Hornets all-time performance list. He entered the day in 11th place overall but recorded personal bests in each of the final three events held on Saturday.  Trost is ranked 22
nd in the nation and fourth in the MIAA in the heptathlon. Colby Smith joined him with a provisional mark and personal best of 4731 points to place ninth overall. He is 35
th in the nation and ninth in the MIAA in the multi-event.

Travis Morrison continued his outstanding season with a championship and another provisional qualifier in the shot put. His mark of 17.68m (58-0.25) was his second best outing of the season.

Tyler Swift gave the Hornets a win on the track as he ran 4:10.84 to win the mile run.

The Emporia State women got another provisional qualifier from
Mele Taula. She threw a personal best of 14.16m (46-5.50) to place third in the shot put. She is ranked 19th in the nation and fourth in the MIAA this season.

The men's 4x400m relay team of
Jake Johnson,
Carter Cox,
Isaac Tarango, and
Jack Watson ran a season's best 3:19.69 to finish sixth.

Isabel Vikoler had the other top eight performance for Emporia State. She ran a season's best 9.18 to finish seventh in the women's 60m hurdles.

The next action for Emporia State will be the Maverick Premier meets hosted by Minnesota State-Mankato. Action starts on Friday, February 9 at Myers Fieldhouse in Mankato, Minn.
