February 23, 2024-Day one of the MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships is in the books and Emporia State has two men in scoring position after day one of the heptathlon.

Luke Grace is in fifth place with 2,793 points while Aren Trost is in sixth with 2,749 points after the first four events on Friday. Grace was in fifth place after the 60m and the long jump before dropping to seventh after the shot put. He had personal bests in the first three events. Although not a personal best he tied for the best mark in the high jump portion of the competition to move up two spots and back into fifth after the first day.

Trost had recorded personal bests in the first two disciplines but was still in tenth place after the 60m and long jump. Although it was below his all-time personal best, he turned in the second best shot put of the competition to move into ninth place.  He finished the day one centimeter below his personal best in the high jump, but it was enough to move him up three spots into sixth headed into the final three events on Saturday.

Coby Smith is in 14th place with 2,387 points with his best event, and the best chance to score big points, the pole vault remaining on Saturday.

For the Emporia State women Isabel Vikoler finished in tenth place in the pentathlon, competing in her first collegiate multi-event.  She started the day with a personal best of 9.02 in the 60m hurdles to place seventh but went down as she crossed the finish line. She battled through the high jump and her first collegiate shot put before posting the seventh best mark in the long jump to move into tenth place overall.  She was eighth in the 800m to maintain her spot and place tenth overall in the pentathlon.

The MIAA Championships will start up again on Saturday with the final three events of the heptathlon starting at 11:00 a.m. Field events will start at 3:00 p.m. with the men's weight throw and the women's long jump.  Action starts on the track with the prelims of the 60m hurdles at 3:30 p.m.
