February 12, 2024-The Emporia State men's D1 disc golf team punched their ticket to the national championships with a convincing victory at the Southwest Shootout presented by Innova Discs over the weekend. The Hornets won the team championship by eight strokes over Grand Canyon Purple.
The foursome of
Isaiah Esquivel,
Justin Farrell,
TJ Reel and
Cade Kohlmeier shot -11 in the first round to lead Arizona State by four strokes. They finished strong, going -4 on the final five holes.
Round two was solo rounds and the Hornets combined to go a field best +2 and widen their lead to six strokes while UC-Davis shot +4 and moved into second place overall.
Emporia State went into the final round on Sunday at -9 for a six stroke lead over UC-Davis while Northern Arizona was third at even par. Grand Canyon Purple and Arizona State were tied for fourth at +1. Northern Arizona had bogeys on #5 and #6 while Arizona State followed with bogeys on #6 and #7 to drop out of contention.
The Hornets birdied seven of the first ten to get to -14 before taking a double bogey on #11 to sit at -12. UC-Davis did the Emporia State one better and birdied eight of the first ten before also taking a double bogey at 11 to go to -9. The GCU Purple team birdied the first seven holes and nine of ten to get within four strokes of ESU at -8 with seven holes to go. All three birdied #12 and parred #14 before UC-Davis bogeyed #14 to drop into a tie with GCU. The Antelopes moved into second with a birdie on #15 and pull within five strokes of the Hornets with three holes to go. Emporia State would then close the round with three straight birdies to secure the win and a bid to the national championships.
Both the Hornet men and women are scheduled to take part in a conference event in Manhattan, Kan. on Saturday, February 17 before playing host to the Midwest Collegiate Championship on March 2-3 at the Peter Pan Park Courses in Emporia.
